A Wet Epiphany
Friday was wet and windy for the blessing of the waters at Epiphany. I got down to the Dapia early to get a dry spot at Roussos caferteria to photograph from.
Even so I had to stand my ground against late comers trying to push in - Greek style. A kaiki arrived carrying nearly thirty young lads in high spirits fueled, no doubt by quantities of Tchipero to add to their bravado and encourage each other to jump into the icy water. The doves were released and the cross thrown far to the right enabling Giorgos Markadonis to catch it.They had dived in white and came out bright pink! Stambolis was packed and the two waiters were run off their feet. These occasions bring out people not regularly seen there, all dressed up in their Sunday best. I was particularly taken by one retired captain emmaculate in his suit and beret.
He was only too pleased to be photographed. Then it was back home for some warming bean soup.Yesterday although still cold, we barbecued some lovely big fish and K's kalamari at our friends' Penny and Takis and with other good company. It turned into one of those lovely long Greek boozey lunches with great music and lots of singing well into the evening.Today as I write with a hot waterbottle on my lap, it is colder than I remember for a long time. Everyone is wrapped up and wearing woollie hats on their motorbikes. Not realy the weather for sitting outside Stambolis but we braved it, aided by an Ouzo or two.
