Event Coverage

Past Annual Events in Spetses - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter

Here you will find specific events that have taken place on the island from year to year. These will include mainly regular annual events, such as name day celebrations, Epiphany, carnival 'apokries' coverage, Independence day, Oxi day and Armata. Other events will be found in News, Articles and Editorial, The Arts and in Community Close Up.

2007 Epiphany 6 January

This year, Epiphany started out as a cold and very grey day, and our thoughts were with the swimmers that were to take to the cold and grey waters later on in the morning. Firstly though, the traditional early morning service of psalms at Ayios Nikolaos was performed, followed by the procession to the Pigathi tou Stavrou, where the waters were blessed and the dove was successfully released.

2008 - Another year, another Epiphany 6 January

Epiphany 2008 - and another very cold and grey day, as locals turned out to watch yet another 'dive for the cross'. The early morning service of psalms at Ayios Nikoloas was followed by the procession to the Pigathi Tou Stavrou for the blessing of the wells and the release of the white dove in to the skies above.

2008 A windy Independence Day on Monday 25th March

A sunny, but windy day here in Spetses this 25 March. Flags were out in force, but had to be held on to, as crowds celebrated the Independence Day this year.

2008 All enjoy Greek Easter

Greek Easter did not coincide with the Catholic Easter this year (or perhaps the Catholic Easter did not coincide with Greek Easter!). Whatever. Without trying to open old religious wounds - in short - Easter Sunday in Greece was 27th April.

2008 Apokries 9 March

For the Apokries weekend this year there was no organised carnival as such, but lots of impromptu groups of people dressing up, around the town in the Ayios Mamas area, having fun!

2008 Ayia Paraskevi name day 25 July

Ayia Paraskevi celebrations were on Friday 25th July this year. There were stalls set up on the track leading down to the beach, with different merchandise on sale. From electrical items, clothes and jewellery to kilos of dried fruit and nuts.

2008 Ayios Yiorgios at Zogheria 23 April

It was wonderful weather for the celebration of Ayios Yiorgios at the lovely church of Zogheria. People were pic-nicing around the bay, but the main party was outside the church.

2009 Armata

Armata 2009 kicks off this year on the 30th August with a performance of The Barber of Seville at the Anargyros Amphitheatre known as the 'College Theatre'. There will be all kinds of entertainment throughout the two weeks of Armata, culminating with the traditional yearly Armata display on Saturday 12th September and the throwing of the wreath on Sunday 13th.
