We had the first rain for months the evening before the Armata celebrations which had us all worried that it would be the third wet one, but Saturday dawned fine with blue skies once again. The island was busier than ever with people flocking in all day. There had been a week of events, some lovely dancing and great music culminating in Saturday's re-enactment of the battle against the Turks. It was enhanced this year with a particularly dramatic oration of the story. As ever the fireworks were stupendous, filling the sky.
We have been lucky this summer in escaping the dreaded 40 degree temperatures. There has nearly always been a cooling wind and the evenings fresh. The sea is so warm now and swimming a joy. I am still beach combing and now have a sideline to my painting and printmaking. I have been making jewellery with my finds and it has been very successfully received. I have not exhibited on the island this year as I have been busy with commissioned work both for people here on the island and back in The UK. Spetses still is an inspiration for my work after all these years. New motives can always be found and I have enjoyed painting views from our house this year.
We have that end of season feeling now that we are into September. Regular friends are departing, soon some tavernas will close and the island will be quieter. Tourism here has not been so good, with mainly Greeks coming for the weekend and August, which is a shame for the businesses here.
Regular friends are still faithful though to the island, especially our Australian ones. A wonderful 91 year old lady who has been coming here for over 40 years is with us now and we had a lovely lunch with her on our terrace with other Greek friends who live in Australia. She says that she "loves Spetses so much" and that she would come "just for a coffee".
It seems to have been a summer of parties and weddings. Our niece's son got married last week at the lovely church of Ligoneri, followed by a lunch at Kaiki beach. The two families from the top of the island guaranteed that there would be much dancing and plate throwing too! Needless to say we had a good time and a chance to see lots of the family.
It is good to be blogging again but it will be from time to time and not each week as before, as I have a difficult health problem to cope with.
I promise more news soon.
