Cultural Society of Spetses Island

The Spetses Cultural Society was founded in 1985, by sixty founding members. Today it has120 registered members, seventy men and fifty women, whose aim is to raise cultural and intellectual awareness, not only amongst its members, but also among the local community.

The members of the society operate within the various departments, which are Theatre, Cinema, Photography, Excursions and Community Dinners, and Public Relations and Publishing.

To date, the Theatre Department has put on 13 plays, by a wide variety of authors from all over the world, ranging from Chekhov to Eugene O'Neill. The 1995 production of Dimitris Kehaidis' "The Fair" was chosen to compete in the All-Greece Amateur Theatre Festival of that year, and returned with the prize for Leading Male Actor in the hands of Thanasis Karamboyas, and praise for the whole cast and crew. The production of "Laskarina Bouboulina" in 2003, written by the society's own Pavlos Paraskevaidis, was so well attended, that public demand merited the extension of its run. The play for spring 2005 has not yet been announced, but it will definitely be more of the excellent entertainment that we have become used to.

The Cinema Department operates as a film club, and is a member of the Greek Federation of Film Clubs (OKLE). It participates in the Greece-wide, yearly meeting, which each year is held in a different town. It has shown over a hundred films by Greek and foreign directors, both old and new. It has presented two, four-day festivals, the one, a celebration of Greek Cinema, and the other to commemorate a hundred years of cinema. It has also invited a number of Greek directors to relevant showings, to speak to audiences about their films.

The Department of Photography has held several exhibitions of artistic photography, some as a part of other cultural events. One exhibition showed old post cards of local interest, another displayed photographs of public figures visiting the island (kings, princes, leaders of state, church leaders and artists, among others). Photographs of historical documents and items, which related to the Spetsiots participation in the struggle for freedom from the Turks, were exhibited for the three summer months of five consecutive years. For all its visitors, this important exhibition acted as a seminar on the local history of this period.

The Department of Excursions and Community Dinners has conducted ten excursions to various places in Greece, of mainly educational purpose. These include Epidavros, Mycenae, Nafplion, Monemvassia, Delphi, and Olympia and many more.

They have organized many dinners and other social occasions, as well as taking part in local festive celebrations.

Public Relations and Publications have, since 1989, been responsible for the monthly magazine, "Spetsiotikos Antilalos" (meaning, "The Spetses Echo"), which presents the cultural involvement of the society itself as well as other organizations on the island. By the end of this year, "The Antilalos" will have reached 2000 pages in print.

Since 2001, the Cultural Society of Spetses has been the proud publisher of a series of books, written by our own members. These are all on matters of local interest, such as, Bouboulina and Spetses' part in the Revolution of 1821, boat-building on the island, the Anargyrios College and other historical subjects.
