About Spetses Island Greece, Greek Saronic Islands

David Webber - Personality on Spetses Island in Greece

What's in a name? My mother was Welsh and my father was English, so they compromised by using both names - David and George.

Whereabouts do you live on Spetses? By the Hadjiyiannis-Mexis museum at the back of Spetses town.

What is your occupation? Painter

Why are you living on Spetses? Wanted to get out of England - moved to Athens. Wanted to get out of Athens - moved to Spetses. Opened my shop, started to paint - and have stayed ever since.

Where are you to be found most of the time? Under the lemon tree in my garden, painting.

Choose - cat or dog: Neither.

Which Spetses beach do you prefer? Garifalo, the small beach at the back of the old harbour.

What's your favourite view of Spetses? From the top of the hills west of Hara , looking over Anargyri, to the mainland coastline beyond.

Which football team do you support? When football is on - the TV goes off! If I had to support someone it would be the local Spetses team - Bouboulina.

Which time of year or season best suits you on Spetses - why? Spring - when the whole island is in bloom and the loneliness of winter has passed.

Do you have any hobbies/pastimes? Painting is my life now. I also enjoy making cards out of various cuttings and a scrapbook of interesting articles. Also, collecting Greek mountain greens (dandelion leaves, known in Greek as horta) in my favourite spot at Hara, where the shafts of light coming through the clouds create an amazing view.

What's your favourite traditional Greek dish? Poached fish and salad.

Who would you choose to headline the next Armata celebrations?  Yiorgos (George) Dalaras.

Where would you take a friend on a one day visit to Spetses? If in the summer, it would be an early swim at Ayios Mamas (the town beach), followed by an ouzo in the local caféneon and finishing with traditional mezés at a seafront taverna. If in the winter, for a long walk through the hills.

What, in your view, is the best part about life on Spetses? Spetses has the perfect climate, the people are friendly and above all it’s safe…actually, we haven’t really realised that here, we live in paradise! One thing to remember though, you have to adapt yourself to the island, not the other way round!

Glad to see David!

David, do you read this? It's Lexy (aka the "little" Alexia) writing from the US. My mother, Sylvia, and I lived on Spetses in the mid-70's, and then I moved back for a couple of years in the mid-80's. My mother and I are coming back this March for our first visit in many years. I'm so glad to see you still live there! Whenever we talk about Spetses, we talk about you. We hope to see you then!  Warmest wishes, Alexia.
