George 'Yiorgos' Fournarakos - Personality on the Greek Island of Spetses
What's the story behind your surname? My family name comes from Mani on the southern tip of the Peloponnese and the actual name means ‘little baker’. My ancestors were probably bakers!
Whereabouts do you live on Spetses? Ayia Marina - with a beautiful view of the sea.
What is your occupation? Captain of the much loved boat the Nautilus which runs to the beaches of Ayia Anargyri and Ayia Paraskevi, every day in the summer months.
Why are you living on Spetses? I was born on the island of Spetses.
Where are you to be found most of the time? In the summer months on the Nautilus travelling to Ayia Anargyri and Ayia Paraskevi. In the winter, day time in the old harbour working on the boat and early evening on the Dapia enjoying a méze.
Please choose - cat or dog? Definitely cat. We have quite a few at home with kittens too!
Which Spetses beach do you prefer? Where I spend the summers - Ayia Anargyri and Ayia Paraskevi. Over the years, I have spent many happy days and evenings Greek dancing with friends at Ayia Anargyri.
What's your favourite view of Spetses? The old harbour, Palio Limani, at sunrise. In the evenings on the Dapia, which inspired the French writer, Michel Deon to write ‘The balcony of Spetses’.
Which football team do you support? Panathinaikos, the green and white, Athenian team.
Which time of year or season best suits you on Spetses - why? May and September, before and after the height of the season. These months are popular with our yearly visitors, and I have plenty of time to enjoy their company.
Do you have any hobbies/pastimes? Gardening and collecting horta, the wild mountain greens.
What's your favourite traditional Greek dish? All kinds of fresh fish with salad. Also briam which is mixed vegetables in the oven.
Who would you choose to headline the next Armata celebrations? Yiannis Parios or Yiorgos Dalaras.
Where would you take a friend on a one day visit to Spetses? Definitely the old harbour in the early morning, followed by the two museums on the island - Hatziyiannis Mexis and Bouboulina.
What, in your view, is the best part about life on Spetses? I love the fresh, clean air on Spetses and the colour and light, particularly when looking out to sea. I also enjoy being able to relax in the winter months when the island is quiet.
