The Mourayo - music bar and restaurant - oldest bar in Spetses, opened 27 years ago. Popular then - just as popular today. For the first 18 years it was famous for its live music. Manolis Syrmas (co-owner and manager, with brother, Sotiris) used to sing and play piano with a regular group of musicians. Famous celebrities flocked to the Mourayo for its unique ambience - Greek singers - Nana Mouskouri, George Moustaki and Demis Roussos; film stars - Joan Collins, Cliff Robertson and other big names - Christina Onassis, Stavros Niarchos, Andreas Papandreau, and ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev.

The music is no longer live, but Mourayo is still the place to be - romantic and fun - cosmopolitan, yet truly Greek. With large yachts and cruisers moored just metres from the large open veranda, customers enjoy good cuisine at reasonable cost. ‘Fish a la Spetsiota’, ‘Prawns Mikrolimano’ and Tagliatelle with salmon and caviar are firm favourites and some of the best fillet steaks grilled on the island - including fillet pepper steak and fillet with cream sauce. Also offered - a different dish of the evening (exc. Sat) which is a very reasonably priced, set menu for under €20.

Mourayo has its own family-produced wine from the Peloponnese bottled in red and white, or by traditional Greek jug. Also a good selection of other wines and for special occasions, Moet or Dom Perignon champagne! Not only does the Mourayo have its splendid waterfront veranda, which is beautifully candlelit in the evenings, but also an elevated seating area inside and attractive outside bar, with traditionally cushioned stone seating and comfortable wooden chairs which feel like being ‘on deck’. The bar serves a great selection of drinks and music is Greek, Latin and English.

Later in the evening, as Mourayo fills up, there is an excellent atmosphere and the perfect opportunity to dance the night away into the early hours. Alternatively, sitting outside by the bar, for those who prefer to just sit and watch all the action. The Mourayo is easily found with its huge entrance palms attractively lit up, giving an exciting and romantic appeal. Also easily reached by foot along the seafront, by horse buggy or straight to the veranda, by water taxi. It is an excellent venue for weddings, baptisms and conferences and Manolis will be happy to discuss arrangements with you.
