Pebble Mosaics

At the Laografiko Ergastiri Spetson (LES) Traditional Folk Workshop. July 2004.

The four day workshop on how to make a pebble mosaic was arranged by Varvara Bratopoulou, one of the Workshop’s organisers. It was originally intended for children, but ended up attracting adults too!

Mr Panayotis Damdimopoulos, an expert at laying pebble mosaics was on hand for the whole four days, instructing and demonstrating the various techniques required. These included: hand picking the right pebbles off the local beaches; visiting areas with pebble mosaics to see different patterns and designs; to mix the materials needed for the base in which to lay the pebbles; for each child to try out various ideas for patterns/designs to be used and to cut out a template for each one; to choose the final pattern/design and to mark it out on the base and then finally to lay both the surrounding white pebbles and the dark grey ones which were to make up the selected design.

The final design chosen was an octopus, as seen in the photograph.
