60th celebration - Ros Forster's birthday evening
Rosalind Forster's birthday party was a fun affair at George's taverna at Ayia Marina on the evening of Wednesday 25th June. With about 65 guests from all corners of the world (Great Britain, Australia, Holland etc) the evening got off to a jolly start with tasty Greek food, drinks and fruit followed by live bouzouki playing from Dimitri and Vagelis.
Old Photographs of Local Spetsiots
We had some interesting replies to our article with old photographs of Spetses locals. Many of you said that you remembered some of the people in the photographs, but no-one knew who everyone was!
One of the lovely replies (the first one in Dutch!) was from Patricia de Leuw, who said how she remembered being photographed with Tasos Zacharias from Tasos Taverna behind Anaragyri beach.
She said "I want to go so badly to the place where in that time I felt home and free and happy". I think that this summed up many of the feelings shared by those who emailed. She said that she would love to return some day and to send many regards to those that may remember her...
Spetses Mini Marathon 16 October 2011

Spetses Mini Marathon - another first of its kind this year, took place on Sunday 16 October at 11.00. There were two routes, with different distances, the first, the very mini marathon - 5km and the second - 26km. The first race took in some of the famous Spetses landmarks, through the town and the second race was round the island road. Both races started and finished in front of the Poseidonion Hotel.
The main objective of this 'mini marathon' (apart from the fun of running and of course, the watching!) is to establish it as an ongoing athletic institution, similar to the 'St Tropez Classic' and the Marathon 'Alpes-Maritimes' in France.
Summer Colours
There’s a definite feeling that summer has started in Greece, when swallows, swifts and house martins swirl from all around, flitting in and out of the nests that they are preparing for their young. Cicadas and grasshoppers start to ‘chirrup’ from all corners of the garden and from along the bushy waysides. Dragonflies skitter from pond to pool and the water is at last beginning to be warm enough for us all to wallow in…
Unwanted Kittens FASE
Every Spring/Summer Spetses has a major problem with kittens being thrown alive in plastic bags into rubbish bins.
'Flame of Hope' Torch - Final Leg Comes to Spetses on 23 June 2011
'Flame of Hope' torch arrived in Spetses on Thursday 23 June, for its final leg carried for the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011, taking place on June 25th-July 4th. The Mayor and local Spetses council were there to receive it, being carried off the catamaran from Athens by two Olympian athletes. It was escorted by police to Ayios Mamas, where the runners then ran the back route to the Poseidonion Hotel. Everyone honked their horns and cheered as the flame was put on to a special column and then the athletes held it high, as it burned for all to see.
This is not the first time the flame has been brought to Spetses. The last time it arrived was before the Athens Olympics.
13th, 14th and 15th June 2008 FASE / SPETSES - GAWF To Spetses again.
FASE SPETSES have invited once again GAWF - Greek Animal Welfare Fund to Spetses. On Friday 13/14/15 June, 2008, GAWF will be conducting a neutering programme for stray cats and dogs. We are most happy to have GAWF on the island and we hope people can help our project a little by making a donation to our Society - FASE / SPETSES to help defer our medical expenses. Thank you.
14 November 2010: A Local Election Result
Local elections were held on Sunday 06 November 2010 in Spetses and the three main candidates were: * Evvagelos Kondaxakis (the present mayor) * Panayotis Lyrakis * Kalomira Koumbi
Evvagelos Kondaxakis won on this first round, but it was not an outright win, as he did not obtain a majority. Panayotis Lyrakis was second, followed by Kalomira Koumbi (the first woman to run for Mayor in Spetses).
The elections then had to go to a second round, set for the following Sunday 14 November 2010. This second round was between Evvagelos Kondaxakis and Panayotis Lyrakis.
