Yanis Hatzimasouras - Personality on the Island of Spetses in Greece

Where do you live on Spetses? With family, animals or alone: In the Old harbour with my wife Jane, son Jonathan (aged 12) and our cats. My two daughters, Chrysanthi (aged 25) and Elizabeth (aged 23) are studying in the UK.

Present or past occupation: From 1985 to 1987 we ran the Amoni bistro (also known as “Jane and Yani”) in the Old harbour. We then opened a furniture shop in town , but I then realised that I had to get back to the kitchen, so in 1992 I started Spetsiotiko, a restaurant on the seafront at Ayios Mamas. In 1997 we then moved back to the Old harbour and opened HATZI’S RESTAURANT which is where we are today.

Where are you to be found most of the time? In the kitchen cooking or on Hatzi’s balcony taking care of our customers.

Which Spetses beach do you prefer? I have many favourite beaches including Ayia Anargyri, Ayia Paraskevi, Zogheria, Kouzounos and Blueberry Hill.

What's your favourite view of Spetses? When I have been away and am returning to Spetses, I love the view of the island as the boat approaches.

Which time of year or season best suits you on Spetses - why? Definitely September. After a busy summer when it gets a little quieter and the weather is perfect and the sea is warm. This is the ideal month here in Spetses.

Where would you choose to live if not Spetses? Northern Greece in the mountains.

If you could start your life again, what career would you choose? A philosopher.

Which country of those you have visited, impressed you the most (other than Greece!)? England for its very well organised state system and the island of Reunio (a French colony, south of Mauritius) for its beauty. I spent a month there when I was in the Merchant Navy.

Do you have any hobbies/pastimes? Watching sports and statistical analysis.

What's your favourite traditional Greek dish? My own Moussaka that I make in a traditional ceramic bowl at Hatzi’s.

Who would you choose to headline the next Armata celebrations? A classical singer, such as Nana Mouskouri.

Where would you take a friend on a one day visit to Spetses? In the day, to one of my favourite beaches and in the evening, to the Old harbour for a meal and fun. The Old harbour is a ‘must’ visit.

What, in your view, is the best part about life on Spetses? It is a safe place to live - it is a wonderful place to bring up children.
