Walking & Hiking

There are plenty of trails in the hills to walk or hike. Tracks lead up to the top of the island, across the other side and zigzag down to many of the beaches, east and west. Pefect hiking weather is from October through to May. If in the height of summer, best to head off eary in the morning to avoid the intense heat. Make a plan for your return journey, whether it be by boat or on foot, later in the evening. Always take plenty of water, as only the main beaches will sell refreshments. There are plenty of alternative, gentler walks, all the way along the seafront from Kounoupitsa to the west all the way to Palio Limani (the old harbour) to the east. Horse buggies or taxi's may be available to take you home, if required.

There are plenty of walking routes all over the island and these can be enjoyed at all times of the year. In the hottest months of June, July and August, it is advisable to start very early in the morning, before the sun gets too hot, or late in the evening when it is cooler.
